AFO or KAFO
What is AFO/ KAFO?
AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) is externally applied device to control foot and ankle position in order to help with lower limb deficits.
An AFO can be used to help with neurological conditions to improve gait and balance, orthopaedic conditions following trauma or surgery to aid recovery or to treat chronic conditions and reduce/manage pain.
KAFO (Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis) is a similar device to AFO but it extends higher up the leg passingknee joint.
It is used in similar way to AFO but also controls the knee joint.
KAFOs are generally used during walking/standing while AFOs can be used by non-mobile people.
You can see an example of an AFO and a KAFO in the pictures on the right. The KAFO is below the AFO.
